Tedderfield Camping and Breakfast Fly In 8 Nov 2025

By Willie Bodenstein

Despite a stubborn spell of weather, Tedderfield Air Park's final breakfast fly-in for 2025 drew thirty-five aircraft and plenty of camaraderie. With camping, coffee, and community spirit on full display, the Sling team's open-door approach once again set the tone for general aviation in South Africa.

Tedderfield Air Park's regular free breakfast and coffee fly-ins have, for the most part, been highly successful throughout the year. The only times attendance has dipped were when Mother Nature decided to intervene.

For this edition, a new element was added, Friday night camping on the field, right next to your aircraft, with a dedicated ablution block for campers and all facilities within walking distance of the clubhouse. However, in her mysterious feminine wisdom, Mother Nature wasn't entirely on board with the idea. Still, she was magnanimous enough to allow Saturday's breakfast fly-in to go ahead.

With the 2025 GA flying season drawing to a close, thirty-five aviators seized the opportunity to get their pride and joy out of the hangars and back into the air where they belong.

A short hop to the east, Springs Airfield hosted their annual fly-in on the same day, but weren't quite as lucky. It seems they hadn't paid sufficient homage to the weather gods and felt Mother Nature's wrath, managing only seven visiting aircraft under less-than-ideal skies.

Our correspondent, Jaco Pitout, who had rented a Jabiru from Rhino Park Airfield for the flight to Springs, was also forced to turn back as the weather closed in.

Tedderfield's event was graced by the presence of JJ and Quintin le Grange, as well as recently crowned world landing champions Iaan and Tarryn Myburgh. Together, they have taken it upon themselves to mentor and guide young aspiring aviators through the often complicated and costly process of learning to fly, a truly commendable initiative. For more on this, read Quintin's report in this edition of Pilot's post on the group of Zimbabwean youngsters hosted by Sling at Tedderfield last weekend, another laudable effort indeed!

The good news is that the team at The Airplane Factory will be sponsoring three more free Tedderfield breakfasts in 2026. The first one, Alan Steward told me, is tentatively planned for late January and will no doubt be a hit, as by then most pilots will be suffering from severe flying withdrawal symptoms!

The Sling team will once again open their doors for their ever-popular factory tours. Frankly, it's high time the rest of South Africa's aviation industry take a leaf out of Sling's book and realised that hiding under a bush does nothing to promote their products. Visibility, engagement, and community spirit are what drive success, not secrecy.

As usual, Pilot's Post will close on 10 December and reopen on 10 January for a well-deserved break.

In 2024 we brought you, completely free of charge, 48 Midweek Updates published every Wednesday, as well as 192 feature reports on Sundays. We remain the only South African publication providing daily coverage from Oshkosh and most major UK airshows.
