Ultralight pilots have had to wait patiently for two years for an opportunity to fly for points and medals at a world championship, but finally competed in the Czech Republic. After two years of postponement because of Covid 19 and its variants the 17th FAI World Microlight Championships 2022 in Hosín, Czech Republic became a reality.
Hosín Airfield, south of Prague in the Czech Republic, is a well-known venue for FAI competitions. This FAI Category 1 event has welcomed 42 crews representing 10 nations.
The championships were open to less experienced competitors, who prior to the competition start, could attend to learn the theory and practice of navigation during a first ever Microlight Navigation Camp for pilots. During the camp they were instructed about navigating the routes and about the scoring equipment and procedures.
The championships catered for various classes in the ultralight category namely:
Classic classes - RAL 1 T (Movable Aerodynamic Control / Landplane / Flown solo)
Classic classes - RWL 1 T (Weight-shift Control / Landplane / Flown solo)
Classic classes - RWL 2 T (Weight-shift Control / Landplane / Flown with two persons)
Classic classes - RAL 2 T (Movable Aerodynamic Control / Landplane / Flown with two persons)
Autogyro - RGL 1 T (Autogyro / Landplane / Flown solo)
Autogyro - RGL 2 T (Autogyro / Landplane / Flown with two persons)
All competitors flew navigation, precision and economic tasks in their various classes. The winners of the classes were at the end of the competition crowned as world champion in their class.
At a lavish ceremony held on Saturday 30 July the winners were announced and the top ten teams were: 1st Czech Republic, 2nd Poland, 3rd Lithuania, 4th Hungary, 5th United Kingdom, 6th Ukraine, 7th Germany, 8th Norway, 9th Slovakia and 10th Croatia.
