The 2019 Lydenburg Fly in

By Dean Hunter

For the second year in a row, Lydenburg's small flying fraternity hosted the Lydenburg Fly in. We are a passionate group of aviation fanatics that have a beautiful area that we regularly fly in and decided to host a fly in, inviting everyone from far and wide to visit our picturesque "small country airstrip" and enjoy a day of planes, planes and more planes.

On the morning of the 3rd of August, the local Lydenburg pilots started up their aircraft and took to the air in single file. This was the start of the 2019 Lydenburg fly in. When we landed a short while later, some of the aircraft started arriving, some folks came from Nelspruit, Witbank, Hoedspruit, Rustenburg and even from Nigel.

Cherice Hunter had arranged for food stalls and craft stalls, all set up and ready for the day's visitors.

The day started at 9 am and the star of the show was definitely Little Annie and her crew. There were up to 80 young kids standing in line that would have the privilege to have their first flight ever on the day.

Due to gracious sponsors, we were able to arrange for Little Annie to take some local children on a beautiful flight around our town. Mark, Sophia, Jon-Marc, Courtney, Ian, Ryan and Phillip all made dreams come true.

A spot landing competition was held in the morning, where we had some great fun. Johan Jansen van Rensburg won 1st prize in his Kitplanes Explorer, Louis Jordaan in his Bathawk came second while Riaan Pieters in his kitfox came third.

The day hosted up to 30 aircraft and 4 helicopters. Hover Dynamics were also doing scenic flights on the day

We are so blessed to have such passionate aviators in our area and great friends that flew in from so far to join us for the day. We can't wait to host our fly in again next year and we would like to invite all passionate aviation enthusiasts to join us on the day. Our dream is to build on dreams of children, making them realize that aviation is within reach of everyone, no matter where you live or where you come from. Anything is possible.

A huge word of thanks is also extended to: Phoenix Flying Squad and K-9 Unit, Reinhardt Transport, Coastal Hire, Longtom Super Spar, McGee Ford, Mahindra Lydenburg, Hyundai Lydenburg, Longtom Nissan, Lydenburg Toyota, LT 4x4, THWI Construction, MPU Printers, Nooitgedact Trout Farm, Indigo Citrus and N3 Rapid Response.
